Music Shopper's Review of Gwenevered's Demo CD Posted: May 23, 2006

Gwenevered
Demo CD
Our Rating: 88 out of 100
The Mediaeval Baebes formed in 1996 when erstwhile Miranda Sex Garden vocalist Karen Blake sought to marry her fascination with the Middle Ages with her love of music. 10 years later, there´s another medievally-besotted maiden on the block. Sidle forward, Missouri´s Jennifer Dunn who calls herself Gwenevered, a derivative of her Christian name and one which originates from her favourite time period.
If anything, the sound of Gwenevered is even stranger than Blake and her bevy of beauties, taking in, as it does, a musical tour of the Middle East, Ireland, and India. On ´WCHJT2M´ featuring the giveaway chorus "Why can´t he just talk to me" Dunn even outweirds freaky folky duo CocoRosie. Like her British contemporaries The Eighteenth Day of May who are themselves named after a traditional Suffolk composition, Gwenevered is a revivalist, covering long-forgotten ditties as well as using these roots to create fresh offshoots.
There´s plenty of echo and reverb on this demo album over the course of a mighty 24 songs which at their most conventional mirror the work of Tori Amos at her most contrary. There´s also plenty of harmony, betraying Dunn´s past as a soprano for both the St. Louis Symphony and Chamber Choruses. Oh my, Fair Lady.
