Prince, Beethoven, and Rage against the Machine seem like an ambiguous mixture however; this unlikely pairing maybe the closest combination to match the sound of Black Party Politics (BPP). Formed in Los Angeles, BPP illustrates the diversity that is southern California. The eclectic sound produced by BPP is a collective contribution of Eddie, Miles, Chris (Topher), Matt, and Bonnie whose musical influences have helped create this music fusion. Jazz, funk, and classical are just some of the genres BPP has been known to merge together. Musical influences are just one part of what makes BPP have such a unique sound, just as they state “The Black Party symbolizes the freedom of expression through ambiguity.”
Vocalist Eddie Henry grew up in the Los Angeles area and was heavily influenced by hip-hop, jazz, poetry, and soul music which were introduced to him by his mother. Miles Safford also an Angelino was inspired to play the guitar after hearing Jimi Hendrix’s "Red House", and since then has been influenced by Spanish classic guitar, soul music, rock and jazz. Upon meeting in 2005 Eddie and Miles began writing music together; they meet Chris (Topher) who at the time was a film student from Denver, Colorado. Chris (Topher) soon began playing the drums his freshman year in college. Chris (Topher) had a strong musical background as he was a DJ since the age of 16. The three formed a band but still felt something was missing from their sound.
In 2006 Eddie, Miles, and Chris (Topher) met Matt Zaldivar. Matt also a Los Angeles native played the bass, and had since the age of 16. Matt not only brought the low end but contributed with infusing his Latin jazz, funk, and Motown influences. The quartet created the sound that they had envisioned but stumbling upon Bonnie McIntosh they soon found that they needed an element that they had not considered. Bonnie grew up in San Diego and has played the piano for over 13 years. Her influences ranged from classic Chopin to ragtime classics by Scott Joplin. Eddie’s soulful voice, Miles’ guitar riffs, Matt’s slithering basslines, Chris (Topher)’s rhythmic drumming, and Bonnie's melodic piano help create the dynamic sound that is now Black Party Politics.
